Evernote in Linux

Previously, I used Zotero to take note all my favourite quotes, academic studies, and some other information discovered when surfing net. Recently, when using Zotero in my academic writing, I found that it is messy due to those non-academic notes. This makes me feel that my Zotero is not purely academic. As a result, I want to purge my Zotero notes to make it purely academic for citation. In order to achieve this plan, I have to move my non-academic notes to somewhere which is similar to Zotero that allows synchronisation, taking note from the web (using web browser), automatically stating date and time, URL, and allows writing extra notes. At the end, I have no better choice but Evernote.

I have used Evernote previously. But due to the limit of the monthly upload bandwidth, I was reluctant to use it. That is why I choose Zotero over Evernote.

There are several possible solutions to solve my problem or fulfil my requirements: synchronisation, taking note from the web, date and time, URL, and writing notes. This can be done by combining any text editing or word processing software with Dropbox. Besides that I have tried Tomboy, a notetaking software. It can also use Dropbox for synchronisation. Furthermore, there is also Android version available. However, these methods cannot state the date and time automatically, or state the URL automatically, or take note from the webpage by selecting the text of interest. As a results, Evernote is more promising to my problem.

In order to run Evernote in Linux, there are several ways: Evernote Web, NixNote and NixNote 2, and Evernote using WINE or PlayOnLinux.

I have tried NixNote and NixNote 2, comparing to Evernote, there is the problem to change the password in NixNote, and synchronising in NixNote 2 is very slow. As a result, I have to use Evernote with WINE.

To make the installation easy and separate from my default WINE, I choose PlayOnLinux to run the Evernote. Running Evernote without installing any Windows component works fine, yet the text at the search bar is invisible and the CJK characters are not supported well due to the font problem.

To solve the text invisible problem, I installed riched20 from PlayOnLinux. In order to solve CJK problem, I imported the following to the regedit,

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Fonts\Replacements]
"PMingLiu"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"SimSun"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"NSimSun"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"MS UI Gothic"="TakaoGothic"
"MS Gothic"="TakaoGothic"
"MS PGothic"="TakaoGothic"
"Arial"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"Courier New"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"MS Sans Serif"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"Tahoma"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"Times New Roman"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"AR PL New Kai"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"AR PL New Sung"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"AR PL UKai CN"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"
"AR PL UMing CN"="WenQuanYi Micro Hei"

The next problem is to work with Evernote using web browser. My primary web browser is Firefox. However, the Evernote Web Clipper addon is almost useless. Finally, I found the solution by using Evernote Web Clipper beta version.

Now, Evernote is my primary non-academic webpage note taking tool.

In the end… it’s still… #google, ^_^

just a small notes to share… well, not everybody will agree with me, or everybody will have the same taste…
see, I do write my journal, or whatever you call it… now, I’ve revereted back to write my own real “private” journal… ie. Less things to be shared in the public, but purely, just for my own consumption… ^_^, with the thought of… one day, when I’m not in this real world anymore, my family, my children, will read it… if they will like to know more about me, about my life… ya, for me, and for my family…
anyway…
so, I’ve used quite a couple of tools available, (mainly free)
I used outlook’s journal before,
then, I changed to #Microsoft #OneNotes,
I love this tools, however, it’s licensed, ie. Not free, and it’s only for windows PC, but I’ve some mobile devices, and I’m using a linux machine mainly,
so, I was looking up and down, trying to find the best tools to use… for my journaling…
I tried some tools on linux too, but then, I don’t like the feature, or simply, the look of it…
I used #evernote, I love that, next to Microsoft OneNotes, honestly, and I started to put in a lot a lot of notes, regardless it’s my own writing, or notes from the web, or parenting notes, or whatsoever… but then, being a non-paying user, I face another challenge, ie. The data capacity allowance every month, and I don’t like it… ah haha… mainly to be blamed, me, myself… cos, I was dumping so much so much data, and so many so many graphic stuff in there… and it ran out of disk space very fast… so, I was thinking, “hm… this is not a long term solution…”,
then, I started to look around on my idevice, after trying a few of them, I used #Journalized for a while, whatever I’m writing, it’ll be sync’ed to the evernote, again, I like it… but then again, in the end, I’m a PC person, I’m a keyboard person… and I’m a multi-windows person… and I’m a big-screen person… whatever…
so, I didn’t quite used Journalized…
then, I started to put my notes/journal/diary, into words, ya, the very conventional words, but opensourced.. ie. At the moment, #libreoffice,
it’s portable, though.. not syncable, but then again, I’m not looking for something syncable anyway, sometimes… it just get out of control, haha…
and when I travel? Or when my PC (be it windows, or linux) is not with me,
again, come another problem,
I’ve tried using dropbox to carry my “file” around, however, I don’t quite like it…
then, I used evernote to temporarily to write something…
again, I don’t quite like it, though it’s convenient, it’s just that… em… to my taste, it’s slightly “bloated”, I mean using evernote…
well, I’m still using it, on and off, for other purpose, not really for writing my diary… and I still love it as it is, ie. Useful… very useful…
and I ditched the idea of using dropbox to carry the file around…
then… lately, I found a new thing, which, I think is the ultimate solution to my needs…
ie. #google sheets, and #google docs,
well, I’ve been using all cloud storage all these while, it’s good for sharing docs, and photos, especially after a trip, with friends, with family and so on…
and just lately, google has put up these docs/sheets apps on idevice, yeh!!! it’s just so “my choice”… and my ultimate choice..
so, now, whenever I’m on the move,
if I need to write or jot down anything, I use these 2… ^_^

evernote, I damn love~

that I can write my notes, my thoughts,
in bed…
while accompanying baby… when she’s there playing and I’m sitting here,
when I’m on the move, in the car…
cos I don’t have a data plan,
and I also do not like to blog on the go… ie. I’m the type who’ll rather type, read again, or edit again, make sure everything’s alright (well, not so serious actually…) and then, only publish it…
therefore, evernote is just THERE for me…
I’ve mentioned before…
I could jot down notes (even include some health related articles, or recipes, or parenting tips…) on my iPad,
or my droid,
or my ipod,
or my windows PC…
or my ubuntu notebook… (except this one, they do not have an apps for linux/ubuntu, the rest, there’s an installer, there’s apps…)
what other apps do I need now??

Notes Taking

I used to “love” MS OneNote a lot a lot…
(yes in a way, I still do, but you know how much you need to pay for the whole MS Office Suite right??)
it’s just designed in a way, as if you’re taking notes with your conventional notebook (those professional types, with pink/blue tags on top and bla bla bla…)
and the look’s really interesting and easy to use…
what more to say, you don’t have to click “save”, and you can just put any pictures you like, anything… it’ll appear just as how you expect it to look like, as if you’re doing it handwrittenly…
anyway…
so, when I kinda moved to linux (ie. ubuntu, as of now… or probably for a while),
I was searching inside out, upside down, for a similar replacement,
I went to “lifehacker“, “mashable” repeatedly in a hope to find some resolution, but nah… nothing…
the best is still… MS OneNote… (yak!!! and that’s how ironic life is…)
then, I started to try to use Evernote
yes, Evernote…
I’d an account with this apps, the free type, but I’ve never really bothered to explore the feature, cos, whatever it is, I still tend to compare whatever I could find, with MS OneNote…
and there you go… you know, nothing can beat MS OneNote… (in my opinion)
but then… I kinda… made myself “having to” juggle between 2 desktops, ie. my windows, and my ubuntu…
and maybe sometimes, my iOs…
the common thing between all these 3, is Evernote…
so, I gave it a try…
and now, I do find it very very very, indeed… very convenient…
though, in ubuntu’s, I still need to rely on the web… however, it delivers…
whenever I go to my windows desktop, I can just sync it to my desktop Evernote,
or, whenever I use my little iPod, or my bigger iPad… Evernote’s always there, for me to take note…
THAT, YOU~~~ MICROSOFT, will not be able to deliver… for FREE!!! wa hahahahahaha!!! go to hell, MS!
I take note,
whenever I look for recipe, it can either be on my desktops, windows, ubuntu,
or my iPad, or my iPod… seriously, whatever’s in my household…
Evernote’s there…
tell me, if it’s not useful!!!
(though the look and feel may “loose” to MS OneNote…)
